A talented and showy fiddler, Charlie Daniels and his band fuse hardcore country with a hard-edged Southern rock, boogie, and blues. The group -- which has had a rotating cast of musicians over the years -- has always been known for its instrumental dexterity, but Daniels and company were also notorious for their down-home, good-old-boy attitude; in the early '80s, they became a virtual symbol of conservative country values. Daniels and his band experienced the height of their popularity at the end of the '70s and early '80s, but they remains a popular concert attraction to date.

Alice Cooper/Marilyn Manson

Date(s): June 20, 2013

Alice Cooper released their first album, Pretties for You, in 1969. Easy Action followed early in 1970, yet it failed to chart. The group's reputation in Los Angeles was slowly shrinking, so the band moved to Furnier's hometown of Detroit. For the next year, the group refined their bizarre stage show.

Drawing inspiration from Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, David Bowie, the occult, horror comics, and (by his own account) the King James Bible, Marilyn Manson established himself in the Nineties as one of the most vilified figures in rock history. Predictably, the more parental groups, politicians and religious advocates protested his music and stage antics, the more popular he became—not only as a musician, but as a martyr in the war against censorship. Charismatic and outspoken

Darius Rucker

Date(s): June 22, 2013

Darius Rucker defied all odds in 2008 when he made the successful and difficult transition from rock-pop star to country star. Many before him have tried such a move, but few have ever succeeded, and virtually none succeeded to the extent that Rucker did, and all with just one album. From Hootie and the Blowfish frontman to bona-fide country music sensation, Rucker achieved the impossible, and his future in country music appears to be very bright.

"Ain't Misbehavin'" at Interlakes Summer Theatre

Date(s): June 25-30, 2013

The outrageously prodigious comic and musical soul of 1930′s Harlem lives on in this rollicking, swinging, finger-snapping revue that is still considered one of Broadway’s best.

The inimitable Thomas “Fats” Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club, honky tonk dives along Lenox Avenue, rent parties, stride piano players and that jumpin’ new beat, Swing. Although not quite a biography, Ain’t Misbehavin’ evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original as a versatile cast struts, strums and sings the songs he made famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Assembled under the expert eye of director/lyricist Richard Maltby, Jr., Ain’t Misbehavin’ is one of the most popular, well-crafted revues of all time. Sometimes sassy, sometimes sultry, with moments of devastating beauty, Ain’t Misbehavin’ is simply unforgettable.

The Black Crowes

Date(s): July 27, 2013

At the time of their 1990 debut, the kind of rock & roll the Black Crowes specialize in was out of style. Only Guns N' Roses came close to approximating a vintage Stones-style raunch, but they were too angry and jagged to pull it off completely. The Black Crowes replicated that Stonesy swagger and Faces boogie perfectly. Vocalist Chris Robinson appropriated the sound and style of vintage Rod Stewart while guitarist Rich Robinson fused Keith Richards' lean attack with Ron Wood's messy rhythmic sense. At their best, the Black Crowes echo classic rock without slavishly imitating their influences.

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" at Interlakes Summer Theatre

Date(s): July 30-August 11, 2013

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.

Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251–183 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus and Mostellaria, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from the line that vaudeville comedians often used to begin a story: “A funny thing happened on the way to the theater”.

"Steel Magnolias" at the Barnstormers Theatre

Date(s): August 6-10, 2013

Laughter, pathos, friendship and new hairdos bond a group of women as strong as steel, as fragrant as southern magnolias.

Kiss

Date(s): August 7, 2013

In the summer of 1975 their fortunes changed with the release of Alive! , which spawned their first US hit single, with the reissued live version of 'Rock And Roll All Nite' climbing to number 12 in November. The appeal of KISS has always been based on their live shows: the garish greasepaint make-up, outrageous costumes and pyrotechnic stage effects, along with their hard-rocking anthems, combined to create what was billed as 'The Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Show On Earth'. Their live reputation engendered a dramatic upsurge in record sales, and Alive became their first certified platinum album in the USA. Destroyer proved just as successful, and also gave them their first US Top 10 single, earning Peter Criss a major songwriting award for the uncharacteristic ballad, 'Beth'.

Molly Hatchet at the Flying Monkey

Date(s): August 10, 2013

Southern rock might have had its heyday in the 70’s, but the legions of fans that come out in droves to see it are sure to tell you different. Turn the dial to any classic rock radio station, and you’re guaranteed to hear a hit from say… Lynyrd Skynyrd. Skynyrd was a band that could have made Southern rock the next "alternative" mainstream had it not been for tragedy striking the band in the form of a plane crash that claimed several band member's lives. From the ashes of that tragedy rose a few bands of the same ilk. Amongst them was Florida's Molly Hatchet.

George Thorogood/Buddy Guy

Date(s): August 11, 2013

Thorogood continues to tour and draw large crowds. Recent efforts include 2003's Ride 'Til I Die, and 2006's The Hard Stuff. Two years later, he continued the covers journey with 2120 South Michigan Ave., a tribute to Chess Records. The special guests on 2120 South Michigan Avenue sport direct connections to Chess and Chicago’s blues scene. Guitarist Buddy Guy made his Chess label debut 51 years ago.

Ke$ha

Date(s): August 31, 2013

If there’s one thing Ke$ha knows how to do, it’s tell stories. Here’s a pretty good one: Two years ago, the aspiring pop singer and songwriter decided she wanted Prince to produce her first album. So, she found out his address and drove to his Beverly Hills home, where she paid the gardener five dollars to let her squeeze herself under his front gate. Then she hiked up the driveway (which was lined in purple velvet), let herself in through an unlocked side door, and rode the mirrored elevator up to the third floor where the Purple One himself was jamming with his band. “It was kind of awkward,” she recalls, “but who cares, right? So I sat on one of the purple thrones in the room until he noticed me, which he finally did. He was like, ‘How the hell did you get in here?’” she says with a laugh. “His security kicked me out, but not before I left him my demo CD wrapped in a giant purple bow.”
