In the early 1980s, Meredith was at a crucial point in its evolution. The Town was struggling with how to responsibly develop and revitalize its downtown area without jeopardizing its small town character and charm, historic resources, and environmental assets.
In 1983, three investors bought the mill property that dated back to the beginning of our country's Industrial Revolution, which had deteriorated into an unsightly sprawl.
Many of the non-historic structures in the complex were razed - but the historic old linen Mill was preserved and reconstructed into a four-floor marketplace. A half-ton copper cupola from atop the tower of a North Woodstock Church was acquired and hoisted to a new perch on the mill roof. The Marketplace along with three new retail buildings were created, and opened it’s doors for business in 1984.
The following year, the magnificent 54-room Inn at Mill Falls was added to the complex.
The area was beautifully landscaped, and the waterfall that powered the old mill was exposed. Instead of walking around the mill property to get to the waterfront, people could now stroll along red brick paths and enjoy the shops and scenery.
During 1993, the owners of the Inns and Marketplace purchased a three-story flat roofed office building. Constructed in 1968, the building dominated one of the most visible and best locations in town, situated directly on the lakefront and surrounded by town parks. After a total reconstruction, the twenty-four-room Inn at Bay Point and the Boathouse Grille opened in May of 1995. In late 2003, the Boathouse Grille was reborn as Lago Costa Cucina.
Shortly thereafter, a family-owned landmark business dating back to 1949, Chase's Country Town House restaurant, decided to sell. The Inns obtained the property in and completely transformed the site into what is now The Chase House Inn and conference center. The Chase House at Mill Falls opened in 1998.
July of 1999 marked the rebirth of an unsightly gas station that sat on Rt. 3. The Inns renovated it in the style of a 1940s country filling station, complete with a clapboard-sided store.
In 2003, after St. Charles parish moved to a new facility, The Inns acquired their old church and the land on which it sits - one of the most desirable pieces of property on the waterfront. Rather than raze the church, it was incorporated into the stunning design. In May 2004, Church Landing celebrated its Grand Opening. Two months later, the world-class Cascade Spa welcomed guests to their new home inside Church Landing.
From a dilapidated mill town to a world-class village resort, Meredith has undergone a remarkable transformation over the last twenty five years, and The Inns and Spa at Mill Falls have played a major role in that transformation.
