The Flying Monkey Brings World Class Performances to Plymouth NH

Nearly two years ago, The Flying Monkey Movie House & Performance Center opened its doors with a sold-out Legends of Rock N’ Blues show. Since then, the former Plymouth Theatre on Main Street in downtown Plymouth has built a steady following for its top-notch performances, as well as its great lineup of films, all of which take place in a unique setting.

The Plymouth Theatre was built in the 1920s and went through many changes over the years, eventually becoming a cinema with two screens dividing the once grand theater hall. It then stood empty for many years until Alex Ray, owner of the Common Man family of restaurants (which includes Lago, Lakehouse, and Camp here in Meredith), purchased and re-opened the building in December 2009, showing classic and first-run movies in the existing movie theaters.

In April 2010, extensive renovations began on the theater. The Common Man construction team spent four months restoring much of the theater to what it looked like in the 1920s. Renovations included gutting the two cinemas and converting them back into one intimate performance hall, uncovering balcony seating that existed in the theater’s earlier years, and completely renovating the restrooms, entrance, and concession area. Common Man Vice President Diane Downing added vintage and retro pieces as part of her redesign of the theater.

The Flying Monkey’s unique seating layout allows fans to enjoy performances in ways no other venues in New Hampshire offer. There is a lounge with comfy couches and chairs in the balcony section, The Orchestra seating is as close to the stage as most venues’ Gold seating sections, new riser and balcony sections have reserved table seating with food and beverage service, and a full-service bar sits at the back of reserved seating, allowing guests to enjoy beverages within the main hall during performances.

And there are some great performances coming up!  Tonight, Friday June 1^st, Leo Kottke will be playing at The Flying Monkey.  There are still some tickets available, so don’t miss this chance to see a folk legend perform in central NH! Don McLean will be coming to the theater next week on Saturday June 9^th, and David Bromberg with Occidental Gypsy is scheduled for the following week, Friday June 15^th.

As for movies, the theater will be showing Coriolanus, Ralph Fiennes’ explosive directorial debut, on Saturday June 2^nd and Sunday, June 3^rd. The Flying Monkey also runs a children’s film series, with Martin Scorsese’s Hugo playing this Sunday afternoon and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang next Sunday the 9^th. Also next weekend, the theater’s independent film series will feature the apocalyptic thriller The Collapsed on Friday June 8^th.
