Looking for a great family activity in the Lakes Region this weekend? Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has just the ticket—the Festival of Flight, featuring a hawk watch, crafts for children, live animal presentations, and a tethered balloon ride!

On Saturday, September 8th from 9:30 – 6:30, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness, NH will be hosting a day of celebrating the wonders of flight and migration sponsored by Community Guaranty Savings Bank. Take a tour of the visitors’ center and extensive grounds, which include meadows, mature forests, and marshlands, where lucky visitors may spot a resident hawk. There will also be presentations by the Squam Lakes staff at the Amphitheater, with opportunities to see live birds of prey up close!

On the Picnic Lawn, IBEX Puppetry will present ‘Celebration of Flight’ at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. IBEX Puppetry is run by Heather Henson, the daughter of puppeteer Jim Henson of Muppet fame, and the show promises to be top-notch! With elegant kites and choreographed puppetry, guests of all ages are sure to be spellbound. Check out this preview of the show:

For those who are inspired to make their own kites, there will be a Kite Making Craft Workshop at the Tamworth Pavilion from 9:30 am – 3:00 p.m. Children ages 10 and over are also encouraged to play the Migration Game on the Grassy Plateau next to Webster Building at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.

Tethered Hot Air Balloon Rides provided by RE/MAX Bayside of Meredith will be available in the field in front of Welcome Center. Balloon Rides are $10 per adult and $5 per child, and reservations can be made in advance by calling 603-968-7194 or emailing info@nhnature.org. All other Festival of Flight programs are included in the trail admission fees: FREE/members; $15/adult, $12/senior (65+), $10/youth (ages 3 to 15), children 2 and under free.
