09 Oct Columbus Day Weekend 2015 in the Lakes Region
This is the pinnacle of the season—the days are warm, the nights are cool, and the colors throughout the area are glorious—welcome to autumn in New England! For residents and visitors to New Hampshire, the high point of fall has long been Columbus Day Weekend, when peak colors often coincide with the three-day holiday. This year is no exception, with the foliage now popping vibrant reds and oranges in the Lakes Region. Here are some fun ways to enjoy the scenery this weekend:
The Sandwich Fair – Visitors to the Lakes Region can enjoy the Sandwich Fair while on their foliage excursion. This event is a long-time annual tradition, always on Columbus Day Weekend. The Sandwich Fair has taken place for over a century and is one of the biggest fairs in New England. With dozens of 4-H exhibits, food contests, tractor shows, photo contest, and even a Lego competition, Sandwich Fair truly has something for everyone. All the fun is listed on the fair’s website at www.thesandwichfair.com.
Harvest Festival – Bring the whole family to Beans & Greens Farm in Gilford, NH for a weekend of fun fall activities. Little ones can visit and feed the barnyard animals and explore the indoor Haymaze or the outdoor pumpkin maze. The Corn Maze is always popular with bigger folk! The farm is also offering free hayrides, face painting, and pumpkin carving this weekend. Guests of all ages can try to hit the Bull’s Eye with the Veggie Slingshot! The farm’s deli will be open all weekend serving hot cider, cider donuts, and hot soup in addition to many other tasty treats, and the Corn Maze will transform into a Night Maze on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from 8-10 pm. For more information, including fees for the Corn Maze, please visit Beans & Greens website at www.beansandgreensfarm.com. Reservations are required for the Night Maze. Please call 603-293-2853.
Fall Foliage Special Trains and Cruises – The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad and the M/S Mount Washington are offering special excursions that highlight the beauty of the Lakes Region and allow guests to view the landscape from a different angle—away from roads and towns. Head through the woods to the other side of the hills on the Scenic Railroad or out onto the stunning Lake Winnipesaukee aboard the M/S Mount Washington.
