King Pine Hosting Ski-A-Thon for Sammy this Weekend

king pine skiingWe have snow in New Hampshire! And along with snow comes classic winter activities, including skiing at some wonderful resorts in the Lakes Region. This weekend, King Pine Ski Area is taking it to the next level with a fundraising ski challenge for a great cause.

Starting tonight, January 9th at 9pm and going through Saturday the 10th, King Pine Ski Area at Purity Spring Resort in East Madison is sponsoring the second Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon. The Ski-A-Thon will benefit one of King Pine’s own, Sammy Gillard, a little girl with Rett Syndrome. The event’s goal is to raise $45,000 to fund a wheelchair-accessible vehicle for Sammy. With this vehicle, Sammy’s family will be able to continue to travel with her and provide a much happier and fuller life.

sammy-3-cropSeven-year-old Samantha “Sammy” is the daughter of Jenny and Geoff Gillard of Newton, MA. Sammy’s grandfather “Tex” Gillard is a long time ski patroller at King Pine Ski Area, and the family members have grown up skiing in East Madison. Sammy was diagnosed with Rett syndrome when she was 9 months old. Rett syndrome is a unique developmental disorder caused by mutations on the X chromosome. A rare disease, the incidence of Rett syndrome is about 1 in 10,000 females. The course of Rett syndrome, including the age of onset and severity, varies from child to child. As the syndrome progresses, most children lose purposeful use of their hands and the ability to speak. Other symptoms may include loss of motor skills, breathing and cardiac irregularities, seizures, digestive problems, scoliosis, and tremors.

Registration for the Ski-A-Thon is $99 per person and includes dinner, breakfast, and lunch, a 24-hr lift ticket, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages throughout the event, as well as a customized t-shirt, games, face painting, and memories to last a lifetime! Register a team of four and the 5th is free! Ages 8 and under are also free, and kids are encouraged to get friends and family to sponsor them per ski run. King Pine will provide a form to keep track of sponsors. A slope-side lodging package at King Pine is available through Purity Spring Resort, or come prepared with your sleeping bag for the Lodge!
