Summer is here and it’s the perfect time to be out on a NH lake! Whether you like to paddle a kayak, drive a speedboat, or relax on the deck of a pontoon or cruise ship, there’s just something about the smell of the clear, fresh water from the surrounding mountains that’s calming, yet invigorating. Here in the Lakes Region, we see folks enjoying all kinds of vessels on the water. For those who like to explore the history and natural wonder of these lakes with cruises and tours, the Lakes Region has plenty to offer. Here are a few of the various cruises available this summer…
M/S Mount Washington – Weirs Beach – The M/S Mount Washington offers many cruises on Lake Winnipesaukee, including Scenic Day Cruises, Sunset Dinner Dance Cruises, and Sunday Champagne Brunch Cruises. The M/S Mount Washington visits 5 ports on Lake Winnipesaukee and takes on passengers in Wolfeboro, Meredith, Center Harbor, and Alton Bay on alternating days of the week with daily cruises departing from Weirs Beach. M/V Sophie C. – Weirs Beach – The Sophie C. is the oldest floating post office in the United States. Each season she provides mail service on Lake Winnipesaukee, a tradition dating back to 1892. Both of Sophie’s daily mail runs takes her to 5 islands, where her staff delivers mail to the island residents and summer camps. In addition to being a full-service post office where these residents may purchase postal supplies and stamps, Sophie also has a collection of ice cream novelty treats and snacks for sale. A daily ice cream bar has become quite a summer tradition for her island friends! Passengers aboard the Sophie C. are invited to fill out Sophie C. postcards and mail them right on board, complete with Sophie’s own unique, collectible cancellation stamp. Squam Lake Cruises – Holderness – See Squam Lake’s amazingly clear water, rocky shores, celebrated islands, historic homes, scenic mountain views, and remarkable wildlife with one of these wonderful 90-minute guided tours. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center offers several tours, each with a different focus. The Explore Squam Cruise has something to delight everyone—learn about the natural history of the lake, the wildlife that makes Squam so special, and the people who have enjoyed these lakes for over 5,000 years. Visitors can view locations where the movie On Golden Pond was filmed over 30 years ago, while watching for wildlife like Common Loons and Bald Eagles. The Science Center also offers a Nature of the Lakes Cruise with an experienced naturalist educator, Loon Cruise, Dinner and Sunset Cruise, Lake Explorers – A Family Cruise, group tours, and private boat charters. EKAL Cruises – Meredith – In addition to canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals, EKAL Activity Center in Meredith offers cruises and tours aboard their antique speedboat and their pontoon cruise boat. Miss Meredith is a 1931 28-foot triple cockpit Chris Craft runabout offering the age-old thrill of speedboat rides on Lake Winnipesaukee. The 45-minute tours leave daily on the hour from EKAL’s dock in Meredith, unless she is on a private charter. EKAL also offers charter tours on their stylish 26-foot pontoon boat for up to 10 people. With this cruise, you get to choose the experience—pack a cooler, stop and swim, eat lunch at a sand bar, head to Wolfeboro, Weirs Beach, or Center Harbor—it’s completely up to you!
