06 Feb Winter Festivals Throughout the Lakes Region
We’ve got lots of fresh snow and it’s time to get out and play! In celebration of winter in New England and its many fun traditions, a few local organizations are hosting some great festivals, and everyone is invited—so bundle up and head to the Lakes Region this weekend and next!
This weekend, on Saturday, February 7th, the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth, NH will be holding their annual Ice Harvest & Winter Carnival. This signature event is an experience rich in the historic New England traditions of celebrating winter with outdoor fun, along with the unique trade of harvesting ice. Visitors will experience living history as they learn how to score, grid, cut, and stack ice properly. Warm winter favorites will be available in the Farmhouse Kitchen, and guests can enjoy winter carnival games & crafts. There will also be ice sculpturing demos with local favorite Brian Stockman, animal tracking walks, lessons in outdoor cooking, and so much more! To learn more about all of the activities planned for the Carnival, please visit the Museum’s website at www.remickmuseum.org or call 800-686-6117.
Prescott Farm in Laconia, NH is holding its 5th Annual Winter Fest next Saturday, February 14th, from 11am – 3pm. There will be a variety of activities for all ages, and everyone can enjoy a hot cup of cocoa by the bonfire after a nice snowshoe hike or sledding. The festivities include a bonfire & s’mores, sleigh rides, face painting, crafts, sledding, snowshoeing & cross-country skiing, and a Storywalk.™ Please bring your own skis and sleds. Prescott Farm has a limited supply of snowshoes available for use, with the cost included in admission. Winter Fest is free for members and children ages 3 and under, $3 per person for non-members, and $10 families with 2 or more kids. All proceeds support Prescott Farm’s environmental education programs. For more information, visit the Farm’s website at www.prescottfarm.org or call 603-366-5695.
Also on Saturday the 14th, Squam Lakes Association will be holding its own Annual Winterfest in Holderness, NH. Join the SLA on Piper Cove and in the SLA Resource Center from noon – 3pm for a day of winter fun! Outdoors there will be ice-skating, sledding, cross-country skiing, and Nordic skating demos. There will be a bonfire to warm up by, marshmallows to roast, and hot cocoa to sip. As usual, the SLA is also holding its annual chili contest during the event, so when you need a break from playing outdoors, come indoors to sample several recipes from local restaurants and vote for your favorite! The outdoor Winterfest activities are free, and there is a small fee for the Chili Contest. For more information, visit the SLA’s website at www.squamlakes.org or call 603-968-7336.
